Zuzanna Konarska has been working as a Scrum Master for small startup teams, later with several teams in the energy industry in Poland (PGE Systemy) and now, for several months runs an international team at Lufthansa Systems and implements Scrum practices in the organization. Zuzanna combines her path as a Scrum Master with psychological, anthropological and reporter background. She likes working with people and working with new technologies. In addition, Zuzanna loves traveling and observing interpersonal processes.
Help, my team doesn’t want to Scrum!
When we try to embrace the change in the organization, we are aware that we can find the impediments, challenges and resistance. In our talk we would like to touch the situation when the resistance comes from development team.
There are two types of resistance. First is the open one. We can hear the sentences like “Scrum doesn’t work for us”, “it has no sense”, “these changes are pointless”, “let’s not touch anything’. The second type is hidden. We have secret guerilla forces and we can sense team’s motivation to change is almost none.
There could be many reasons of such behavior. Wrong perception of Scrum. The star-person in the team who wants to defend his status quo. The all-stars team. Willingness to save some sweet comfort zone. Conflict of values. Lack of trust.
We would like to talk about few cases and try to deal with them both from Scrum Master and psychologist perspective. We also want to share what we did when we worked with such teams.
Every time you here “Scrum is not for us” there could be different reason — and before starting the argument it’s crucial to get know this reason.
We also want to share our experience from work in teams where such insults were present. But above all, show how we as scrum masters can deal with situations such as passive resistance. The concept of social proof of equity will be helpful in explaining these phenomena.
