What did we learn when visiting the Toyota factory?

Toyota is well known for its production system that was an inspiration for the Lean movement. However, it’s one thing to read about how famous companies do things, and completely different to actually see them in action.

We use our trips as a chance to visit the market leaders and learn their success and failure stories. We talk with their first-line employees, managers, and CEOs in our quest to better understand how to create successful organizations.

I want to share what we’ve learned from visiting Toyota, Mazda, Amazon, Zappos, and many other companies on three continents. I will tell you their stories, what I believe is their unfair advantage, and why it’s so hard to mimic them. Finally, I hope to leave you with some ideas to try in your own organization.
