Workshop—How to use system thinking to navigate complex change
Tired of chasing quick fixes and constant firefighting? We were too - until systems thinking shifted how we saw our work. It helps you see how different parts of your system influence each other, so you can stop treating symptoms and start solving root causes. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll tackle the “Community Maze” simulation, navigating a system with hidden rules. You’ll see how small actions trigger unexpected ripple effects - just like in real-world software delivery.
We’ll debrief the experience and connect it to challenges you face. Then you’ll learn to create causal loop diagrams using simplified versions of your own projects. You’ll spot common system patterns and leave with a toolkit to map and shift behaviors in your environment. You’ll walk away with new insights to help you to apply systems thinking in your daily work.
Session outline:
1. Welcome and Rules
2. Systems in Daily Life
3. Why Systems Thinking Matters – discussion, question to the participants why system thinking is important, collecting their views
4. Community Maze Exercise – participants are divided into two groups. Each group must navigate through a maze marked on the floor. Each group receives a map at the beginning and time to prepare a strategy for completing the maze. The maze is navigated by all participants one after another. During the navigation, participants cannot speak or give hints to each other. During the exercise, many patterns emerge showing how the system behaves under different circumstances.
5. Group discussion and reflection on exercise
6. Casual loop diagrams and system archetypes explanation - presentation what kind of system archetypes we have and how they are reflected in casual loop diagrams
7. Drawing of casual loop diagrams in groups
8. Conclusions and closing
Karolina will do the workshop with Eliza Willim.
